Chapter 34

After her next session with the Emine, who insisted on being called Karen, JV felt better. She was steadier than after their first talk and she realized she should have talked to someone a long time ago, but who? She still couldn’t tell her family, she didn't know if she would ever be able to. Until Rebecca, she hadn't had friends she could talk to. There was no one she was close enough to share secrets with, even little secrets, much less her secret horror.

Karen had said when she met with her on Friday that it was okay that she didn’t want to talk about it, but treating her attack like a secret was only letting it hurt her more. She said it would help to tell someone she was close to. Someone other than Steve. JV wasn't so sure.

Saturday afternoon, she was in Rebecca's living room with Rebecca. Steve and Nick were busy in the Khan's office. She didn't know what they were doing, she hadn't cared enough to ask. The two women sat together, laptops open in front of them as they worked on Christmas shopping.

"Do you ever wish you could just go into the store and wander through until you find what you're after?" JV asked.

"Not really," Rebecca shrugged. "I hate crowds and it's always in the back of my mind that someone from my old Chanat will see me. That they'll try to take me back."

JV frowned. "Why would they do that?"

Rebecca gave her a kind smile. "Didn't Steve tell you?"

"Tell me what?"

"How I got to be here."

JV gave her friend a confused look. "He hasn't said a word."

"I shouldn't worry anymore, but I do." She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying to figure out where to start. "When I met Nick I'd been on the run from my Chanat for about a year. My father was the Kadri."

"Was?" JV asked.

"He may still be for all I know, I haven't spoken to any of them since I left, three and a half years ago. Anyway, I was living wild, as a cougar. I hadn't been in my human form in about six months when I wandered into his territory. He chased me down, caught me, convinced me to shift and offered me a shower. Oh my, that shower was heaven.” She closed her eyes and remembered for a moment. “He convinced me that I was safe here. I didn't know if I could trust him, but I trusted my instincts. I told him I was running from an arranged marriage and that I wasn't going back.

"He said I didn't have to, I could stay with him. It took us less than a day to wind up in bed together. I almost sealed our mating that first night because I didn't know what I was doing.” She smiled at the memory. “Things moved extremely fast between Nick and I, and Steve wasn't nice about it, not at first. He softened somewhat when
